Tom O'Connell, the first high school coach to serve as President of the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), recently retired after an illustrious 51-year career in baseball coaching. From 1969 to 2000, he led Pulaski High School in Milwaukee, where his teams achieved a record number of wins. Following his retirement from teaching, he spent 15 years at Catholic Central High School in Burlington, Wisconsin, where his teams won five state championships and reached the state quarterfinals for ten consecutive years. He later revitalized the baseball program at St. Francis High School.

O'Connell has been named National Coach of the Year three times and Midwest Coach of the Year four times. In 1995, he coached the USA Baseball North Team at the U.S. Olympic Festival, and he has been inducted into five Halls of Fame, including the ABCA Hall of Fame, where he was the 16th high school coach ever inducted.

A leader within the ABCA, O'Connell served as President in 2002 and now sits on its Board of Directors. He is also proud of his contributions to the ABCA Code of Ethics and his ongoing work in international baseball through ISG Baseball.

O'Connell has authored three books, including *Coaching Baseball: Techniques and Tactics*, and has been a frequent speaker at clinics across the U.S., Europe, and New Zealand. He has also scouted for several MLB teams and served as Lead Envoy Coach in Germany for Major League Baseball.

Beyond baseball, O'Connell has been actively involved with Milwaukee Irish Fest, where he has served on its Board of Directors. He and his wife Paula have three children and six grandchildren.

Coach Wolforth has consulted for seven MLB organizations and dozens of NCAA programs. He is a regular featured author in Collegiate Baseball and has been a featured speaker at the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) National Convention five times since 1999 as well as a presenter at the American Sports Medicine Institute's Injuries in Baseball Annual Conference twice. Coach Wolforth and The Texas Baseball Ranch have been featured in Sports Illustrated, ESPN the Magazine, Men's Journal, Baseball Digest, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. The documentary, Late Life: The Chien-Ming Wang Story, showcased how Coach Wolforth helped the former Cy Young runner-up return to the Major Leagues after a devastating injury.

His 25+ year passion for uncovering possible constraints and limitations to baseball performance as well as identifying the keys to accelerated growth and development stems from the fact that he was very dissatisfied with the level of his own performance as a college player and vowed to help other athletes avoid his mistakes and instead maximize their God-given potential. Hundreds of elite athletes from all over the world come to Montgomery, TX to work with Coach Wolforth. In addition to Trevor Bauer and Chien-Ming Wang, his clients have included Major Leaguers Justin Verlander, Scott Kazmir, Tyson Ross, Raul Ibanez, CJ Wilson, Bud Norris, Colin Poche & Robert Dugger.

In 23 seasons as head coach, Pat Doyle’s San Joaquin Delta College teams won more than two-thirds of their games while qualifying for the California State Playoffs 17 times. 
Doyle got his coaching start at Lodi High School and Tokay High School, both in California, before being hired as an assistant baseball coach at San Joaquin Delta College in 1976. He took over as leader of the program the following year and remained head coach through 1999, compiling a 568-274 record (.675). 
Doyle has been very active in the international coaching community, serving as a manager and assistant coach for several teams, working for Major League Baseball International and other organizations. 
For two seasons (1990-91), Doyle also served as manager of the Anchorage (Alaska) Glacier Pilots. After serving as an assistant coach for Team USA in the 1994 Baseball World Cup, he was named head coach for the 1996 Republic of Ireland National team, managed the British national team in the 2010 European Baseball Championship, and was head coach of Team Israel in the 2011 European Baseball Championship Qualifiers. Most recently, he served as an assistant coach for Team Israel alongside head coach Jerry Weinstein in the 2017 World Baseball Classic. 
Doyle also worked as a consultant, coach, and envoy for Major League Baseball International and coordinated the now-defunct MLB Envoy Coach Program from 1993-2011. He helped build baseball fields and coaching programs and worked with players and coaches in North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. From 1989-2006, 
Doyle served as President of the California Community College Baseball Coaches Association (CCCBCA), which later established the Doyle Scholarship in his honor. He has also been a recipient of the National Baseball Congress Coach of the Year Award (1991) and the European Baseball Coaches Association Coaching Achievement Award. 
Doyle currently serves on the Board of Directors for Play Global! and the International Sports Group (ISG). He has also been an active speaker at numerous baseball clinics at the national and international level. 
In addition to the ABCA Hall of Fame, Doyle is a member of the CCCBCA Hall of Fame, the Stockton Athletics Hall of Fame, the Lodi Athletic Hall of Fame and the Anchorage Glacier Pilot Hall of Fame. The Santa Monica, California native is a graduate of University High School in Los Angeles. Doyle’s college career began at Los Angeles Valley College (Calif.) before transferring to Fresno State University (Calif.) where he was a pitcher. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Fresno State in 1967 and later earned a master’s degree from California State University Sacramento. Following his collegiate playing career, Doyle pitched in the Boston Red Sox organization and for the Lodi Guild Winemasters semi-pro team.

June 27, 2006, Dan McDonnell, one of the top young minds in college baseball, was named the 18th head coach of the University of Louisville baseball team. And on June 15, 2007, McDonnell and the Cardinals took the field at hallowed Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha for game one of the 2007 College World Series.

Not bad for 353 days on the job.

As the first rookie head coach to lead his team to Omaha in 27 years, McDonnell was named National Coach of the Year by Rivals.com after guiding the Cardinals to a then-school record 47 wins during that 2007 season. He followed that impressive debut season by leading Louisville to 13 more NCAA appearances, including five more College World Series berths in 2013, 2014, 2017, 2019 and 2025, as well as 10 conference regular season titles and two conference tournament championships. Louisville has hosted 16 different rounds of NCAA postseason baseball in the last 18 full seasons with NCAA Super Regionals in 2007, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2025 as well as nine NCAA Regionals in 2009, 2010, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2022. McDonnell added his second career National Coach of the Year honor following the 2017 season receiving the award from Baseball America.

In McDonnell’s first 20 seasons as head coach, Louisville ranked No. 6 nationally in wins with 823, including a school-record 53 wins during the record-setting 2017 season. During the 20-year span, the Cardinals have produced a consensus National Player of the Year (Brendan McKay, 2017), 44 All-Americans, 121 all-conference selections, seven conference Pitcher of the Year winners, five conference Player of the Year winners and one conference Freshman of the Year. Additionally, the UofL baseball program has generated 116 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft selections in the last 20 years.

The Ville to the Show

Prior to Dan McDonnell's arrival in 2007, the University of Louisville program had produced just two players that had reached the MLB level and 21 overall that had been selected in the Major League Baseball Draft.

All of that changed under McDonnell, with six players being selected in his first season including Trystan Magnuson, who became Louisville's highest-ever draft pick to that point at No. 56 overall. Under McDonnell, Louisville has seen 116 players chosen in the MLB Draft with 11 in the first round and 39 in the top five rounds.

The Cardinals checked another milestone off the list in 2021 with Henry Davis being selected first overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Louisville's success in professional baseball doesn't end with the draft though, as the Cardinals have been among the best in the country at getting players to The Show. Twenty-seven of McDonnell's players at Louisville have reached the big leagues, including 25 from 2014-25, the third-most of any program in the country.

The Cardinals had a program-record 14 former players appear in the Major Leagues during the 2023 season.

McDonnell on the International Circuit

The Louisville baseball program has been well represented on the international diamond in recent years with 21 players competing in events for their home countries since Dan McDonnell was hired.

McDonnell has twice served on the USA Collegiate National Team staff, as an assistant coach in 2009 and most-recently the manager in 2019.

In 2009, Team USA finished with a 19-5 overall record that summer with series victories over Canada and Guatemala, and won a gold medal at the 2009 Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline World Baseball Challenge in Prince George, British Columbia, Canada.

Under McDonnell's leadership in 2019, the USA CNT went 9-6 with a 4-1 series victory over Cuba in North Carolina and 2-1 best-of-three series win over Chinese Taipei in Taiwan. Team USA then won a pair of games against Japan before ultimately losing the best-of-five series. The series in Japan was highlighted by a 2-0 shutout victory in game three, with Louisville southpaw Reid Detmers tossing five shutout innings with just one hit allowed.

Between Louisville and Ole Miss, McDonnell has coached and signed 32 players with international baseball experience with Team USA and Team Canada as either a team member or a tryout participant.
